What is the Course?

GCSE Art & Design provides an opportunity for students to develop their cultural awareness and creative skills expressing their ideas through projects that are exciting and relevant, exploring a range of media, techniques and processes, developing imaginations through learning that is expressive, imaginative, thoughtful and reflective.

What will I learn?

Unit 1 - Portfolio
This coursework unit aims to develop student's skills and understanding of a broad range of media and techniques. Themes explored during the course include self identity, landscape and the environment and messages.

Unit 2
The externally set assignment is an extended project where you will be given a choice from 7 starting points supplied by the exam board. Students respond to their chosen starting point, covering all 4 assessment objectives.

How will I be assessed?

Unit 1 Portfolio of coursework 96 marks (60% of final mark)
Unit 2 Controlled examination 96 marks (40% of final mark)

When will I be assessed?

Ongoing assessment will take place throughout the duration of the course.
Final deadline for all coursework will be Easter (Year 11). Internally assessed - externally moderated.

Additional Information

Art packs are available to buy with basic equipment and materials for independent study. Access to a camera would be beneficial.

What will this qualification allow me to do?

Further study (A Level art or BTEC Level 3)
Artist, illustrator, architect, product designer, graphic designer, fashion & textiles designer, games & web designer, set or costume designer, film/TV director, editor, animator, art teacher, lecturer, art sales, curator.
